You may think you know the story. After a miserable childhood, penniless orphan Jane Eyre embarks on a new life as a governess at Thornfield Hall. There, she meets one dark, brooding Mr. Rochester. Despite their significant age gap (!) and his uneven temper (!!), they fall in love—and, Reader, she marries him. (!!!)
Or does she?
Prepare for an adventure of Gothic proportions, in which all is not as it seems, a certain gentleman is hiding more than skeletons in his closets, and one orphan Jane Eyre, aspiring author Charlotte Brontë, and supernatural investigator Alexander Blackwood are about to be drawn together on the most epic ghost hunt this side of Wuthering Heights.
While maintaining the main plot points of a beloved classic, Jane Eyre, My Plain Jane was another humorous pop culture infused read from Cynthia Hand, Jodi Meadows, and Brodi Ashton.
While I am unlike most reviewers, not being head over heals for My Plain Jane’s source material, I loved how the Lady Janies mixed the life of Jane Eyre, the author, and her colourful cast of characters. I found myself caring about every detail given by the authors, from setting to characters, to the mysteries woven throughout the plot.
Likewise, the characters were equally as appealing to me as a reader. The Lady Janies were able to represent both historical social queues while also allowing todays social norms to steep into the pages. I found myself really caring for Charlotte, and her swoon worthy romance, while also appreciating the fact that Jane Eyre’s character remained virtually unchanged.
I also really enjoyed the small easter egg the authors included to their first instalment, My Lady Jane, though I wont say what it is because, spoiler.
Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.
