Only three posts left until the completion of Blogmas 2017.
As I gear down for the holiday season, I want to take a moment to forewarn you that day twenty-three is a scathing review, and I only hope it doesn’t turn you off completely.
So, without anymore rambling, here is my review for the Short Story Advent Calendar’s day twenty-three offering.
How To Be A Slut by Rebecca Schiff
First Appeared: PORT (2016)
Print Length: 6 pages
Reading the Short Story Advent Calendar has been a chore for me over the past twenty-three days, but I thought I saw a light at the end of the tunnel with short stories twenty-one and twenty-two.
So imagine my disappointment upon opening day twenty-three’s short story packet and having How To Be A Slut as the title.
I read this aloud to my fiancé and upon finishing promptly threw this story across the room, I was that mad. He has had to hear me complain more than once about the curation of the stories in this box. He even came up with a solution, saying that stories like this have a time and place in a box such as this, but perhaps it should have been placed at the start of December and not three days before Christmas.
I didn’t much care for the subject matter of this short story, nor did I find any sort of gain by the end of reading it. All it solidified for me is that Hingston and Olsen’s other box, The Ghost Box, is much more curated to the theme of October and horror than the Short Story Advent Calendar is curated towards December, winter, and the holiday season.
Overall Rating: 1 out of 5 stars.
