How on earth has a week of Blogmas gone by already?
That’s right friends, we are a week into December, a week into Blogmas, and three Monday’s away from Christmas, wow.
While that sinks in, how about you make a cup of something warm, get cozy on the couch, and cut ahead to what the Short Story Advent Calendar had to offer for day seven.
Edna in Rain by Marie-Helene Bertino
First Appeared: Gulf Coast (Winter/Spring 2015)
Print Length: 5 pages
The premise of this story, while personally is nightmare inducing, is hilarious when happening to other people.
Edna in Rain tells the tale of a typical day in the life of Edna made atypical when it starts raining ex’s, her ex’s to be exact. Edna took this abnormal weather phenomenon rather well, all things considered, and relays to the reader what stood out about each ex and where they ended up after their relationship.
The writing is short, sweet, and to the point, making this one of the easier short stories to read from the calendar. However, I think why this didn’t score higher with me is because it is, well, short. I wanted it to be longer, I wanted to laugh at Edna’s day, or God’s favourite sitcom as she puts it. And I am aware that the purpose of a short story is to convey a theme in no shorter than 1,000 words and no longer than 20,000 words, but this concept was so interesting that to only get snip-its of each ex felt as if they were no more important than the next.
Even though the reader is given a little bit more information in regards to Mike Radish and his relationship to Edna, it felt almost disconnected from the lighthearted nature of the other ex’s.
Also, I didn’t really grasp on what the ending was trying to convey. Edna didn’t know who the man was, which led me to believe that he was either her ‘soulmate’ or an ex she hadn’t dealt with yet.
Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars.
